Place in Progress
The Place in Progress map asserts that every city is a work in progress created by its residents in spontaneous ways, whether through formal artistic production or the exuberance of street art like graffiti.
On the right of the map, red text, layered on top of the black text, highlights and lifts up the people make the city’s sounds: mothers, fathers, children, teachers, neighbors, artists, ‘the lady next door’
On the left, artworks created by Newark artists are overlaid onto the urban renewal map. All the images are
placed in ‘frames,’ as all are equally valuable as forms of creativity.
‘
The
works show a breadth of aesthetic vision, but are tied together by their focus
on people, counteracting officialdom’s human erasure.
The images are layered onto the map through a combination of iron-on and glue -- lifting them up reveals the artists’ names underneath.
The map itself is also a work in progress. The first set of works were culled from the most arbitrary of sources: wikipedia’s category ‘artists from Newark.’ Even this most basic, cursory, superficial source highlights the richness of Newark’s culture, negating the negations of the urban planners.
We invite you to contribute names of Newark artists, past or present, whose works should be added to the map.
Artists on the map to date: Amiri Baraka, Hilda Belcher, Judith Bernstein, Edmund Casarella, Jordan Casteel, Andrea Chung, Minna Citron, Willie Cole, Victor Davson, Sharon De La Cruz, Estaño, Charles Gaines, Jerry Gant, Ina Golub, Grace Hartigan, William Pope.L, Noelle Lorraine Williams
